ASSOCIATION OF MARINE UNDERWRITERS OF SAN FRANCISCO

MINUTES OF THE 2001-2002 DIRECTOR’S MEETING
HELD ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2002
AT THE OFFICES OF SWISS RE, SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Meeting was called to order by President Hawkins at 9:08 am.

Directors Present:  Jim Hawkins, Tina Tang, Stan Gibson, Phil Nelson, Julie Vogele, Blaine Simpkins, Dick Yerian

Directors Absent:  Bob Sullivan, Cathy Hammer

A motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the minutes of the October 4, 2002 meeting as amended.

Treasurer’s Report:   Presented by Phil Nelson (attached).  Balance sheet Total Liabilities and Equity amount does not include money from this year’s annual banquet.  The association is in sound financial condition.  The Board of Marine Underwriters expense shown is for the Post Office box.  Clerical expenses are allocated to each event.  “Profit” will be reflected in the future as “income over expenses”.  Treasurer Nelson thanked all committee chairs for adhering to the financial guidelines.

A motion was made, seconded and carried to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

Banquet Committee report:  Jim Hawkins reported for committee chair Brett Eckert.  To date we have 304 attendees registered, including approximately 139 guests, 159 members, 2 retirees, and 4 guests of the Association (retired past presidents, and presidents of the Seattle, British Columbia, and Southern California associations).  It was noted that attendance appears to be down this year.  Last year 342 in attendance, 199 being members.   Banquet committee should investigate viability of continuing to send Banquet notices by email only.

Education Committee report:  Presented by committee chair Stan Gibson.  The Hull class will be offered this Spring, and Bob Langenhan has agreed to be the instructor.  Phil Nelson has arranged a room at Fireman’s Fund/McGee’s offices.  It was noted that a better response was received from postal mailing than email.  The Hull class will be announced at this year’s banquet.  Mr. Gibson also advised that a one time seminar on California Claims regulations is being worked on, and may be available this spring.  The USF Maritime Law Journal should be out this week and will include our Glossary, which will make it legally “cite”able.  Mr. Gibson asked that he be given the list of banquet attendees so that the mailing list for the Education committee might be expanded.

President Hawkins thanked the Education Committee for a great year.

Golf Committee report:  Phil Nelson reporting for committee chair Spencer Williams.  The 2003 Golf Event is scheduled for Friday, June 20, 2003 at Chardonnay.  Save the date fliers will be distributed at the banquet.

Old Business:

Website:  We are live!  Announcements on classes and the golf event should be sent to Jim Hawkins in Word format for inclusion.  We still need a webmaster.  Glossary is not fully functional yet.  It was mentioned that a mailing system can be set up via the website, which will be investigated.

New Business:

The following individuals have submitted applications for membership:

  1. Michele Brager – Gibson, Robb, & Lindh
  2. F. Michael Simone – AIMA
  3. Julie Castillo – ACE USA-Inamar
  4. Eunice Lyons – Fireman’s Fund/McGee

These individuals will be recommended for membership at the General meeting.

Glossaries will be made available for sale at the banquet.

Meeting was recessed at 9:58 am, and reconvened at 10:50 am.

The guest list for the annual banquet was reviewed with committee chair Brett Eckert.  Several attendees were noted as guests and should be members. Discussion was held with regard to making an exception this year since in some cases attendance had been offered.  Motion was made, seconded and carried to approve attendance list this year.   It was decided that the guest list will be reviewed for inaccuracies after the banquet and attendees who were either ineligible, or attended as guests instead of members will be contacted.  It was noted that Tom Passanisi should be refunded as he is President of the MUSC, and attends as our guest.

A motion was made, seconded and carried to adjourn the meeting at 11:16.

Respectfully submitted,

Julie Vogele
Secretary
